BIRD OF PARADISE SPRAY BOTTLE

3M Sponsored Studio Project

How might we create an environmentally friendly bottle for cleaning solutions that doesn’t require shipping heavy liquids to retailers, and allows for multiple, interchangeable cleaning concentrates?

Concept & Prototype

The Bird of Paradise spray bottle is inspired by the rotation of lenses on a microscope. Though a microscope only has one viewing port, lenses of multiple magnifications can be rotated into alignment to change the image.

Similarly, the Bird of Paradise design allows a user to clean multiple types of surfaces using the same spray bottle; simply rotate the desired concentrate into alignment and spray accordingly.

This high-fidelity prototype is 3D printed from PLA (spray head and concentrate capsules) and resin (water reservoir). Paired magnets are embedded in the head to demonstrate the ease of rotating between the color-coded cleaning capsules while holding the bottle. Magnets are also used to demonstrate capsule replacement.

Design Goals

  • Space Concious

Eliminate excess cleaning products to conserve cabinet space.

Store cleaning solution concentrates easily on bottle when not in use.

  • Reusable

Incorporate sturdy, refillable, and recyclable materials to extend product lifetime.

Utilize cleaning concentrate ‘capsules’ and a reusable water reservoir; diluting as the user sprays.

  • Functional

    Make cleaning enjoyable and colorful.

    Incorporate tactile feedback.

Reduce number of trips to and from cleaning product storage while cleaning a space.
